Overview: Baseball isn’t supposed to be a game of life and death…
The summer that Chase Stern entered my life, I was seventeen. The daughter of a legend, the Yankees were my family, their stadium my home, their dugout my workplace. My focus was on the game. Chase... he started out as a distraction. A distraction with sex appeal poured into every inch of his six foot frame. A distraction who played like a god and partied like a devil.
I tried to stay away. I couldn’t.
Then, the team started losing.
Women started dying.
And everything in my world broke apart.

My Review: 4 I can't walk away stars. I love baseball, am a die-hard New York Yankee fan and love stories that involve relationships that have no other option but to happen. Tyler and Chase have an interesting relationship at the beginning of the story considering she's just 17 and has a bit of hero worship going on when it comes to Chase. Chase isn't allowed to have any scandal in order to keep his contract with his dream team but can't help but want to get close to Tyler.
The story has two different Tylers, a young teenager who is attention starved and then a woman who knows what it is like to long for something so much you give into it. It was easy to like Tyler because she is so honest and tries to please others before finally giving in to what makes her happy. The second Tyler is a bit more jaded but comes about to be a completed version of herself with Chase.
I unwrapped the Twix, halfway into my first bite, when the second ball of note hit my lap. This time, I didn't hesitate, my finger fast in their work.
Quit hogging the only candy on the plane. The hot guy five rows back is starving.
I almost laughed, my lips calming down as I glanced quickly at my dad, a well-timed snore coming from his sagged chin, his cap pulled over his eyes. I finished my chew and contemplated my choices. There were only two-stay in my seat or don't.
I didn't. I got up slowly, as quietly as possible, laying my textbook on the seat, and stood in the aisle. My eyes tried to adjust to the dark, scanning the rows of sleeping athletes. He waves, six or seven seats back, and I stepped toward him, stopping by his seat, his lazy smile tilted up at me.
I looked at him in mock confusion, holding up the wrinkled scrap of paper. "This says..." I squinted at the it in the dark, "a hot guy." I looked up from the paper in time to see him tilt back his head and laugh.
Chase, where do I start? I loved Chase. I was squealing and screaming and laughing all the time. He is more complex than he lets on. He's charming, sweet, thoughtful and also a bit messed up. He's a redeemable hero because he messes up but is worth redemption. He tries like hell to stay away from Tyler but some things are meant to happen.
Certain loves can't be fought. The harder you tried, the harder you would be knocked back, over and over again, until it beat you into submission, until your heart caved and body surrendered. Love like that didn't know the rules of society; it didn't care about life mistakes. It only knew what must be, and what would happen-no matter what.
There's some really painful twists in the story that honestly made me lose my shit. It is to be expected when picking up anything by Alessandra Torre. Torre is a fabulous writer and owns the craft. She draws you into this world, controls and manipulates your emotions and has you reeling all with just her written words on a page in a novel. As always, I'm glad I read this because it's extremely well done and I loved Chase.
This sounds great! I've been on the look out for new bike and this sounds right up my alley X
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I used to love these kind of books - and definitely still have a thing for charming boys with too much sass, fictional or not! Sounds like a nicely done romance novel, may have to give it a read next time I get a craving for them :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great read! Not my usual type but I'll definitely be looking into it! Thanks for sharing <3 xx

Ooooh sounds interesting! I went to see my first baseball game last year in New York (Mets not Yankees I'm afraid! I know how very dare I) so I feel like I'd have the background experience to enjoy this book haha. Will maybe check it out on my Kindle tonight since I have nothing else to read right now. Great job of the review, thanks for sharing Jess xx
