My Review: I'm utterly stunned. 5 no, it's not the fucking little mermaid stars to Ruin & Rule. Pepper Winters is by far one of the best dark romance writers I've ever read. She spins such gritty, potent, and twisted stories that still have redemption and love carefully crafted throughout them. I saw Ruin & Rule's cover and was drawn in like a month to a flame, read the overview, and knew I had to read this book.
I rarely can say this about a book, but there was almost nothing I could say I didn't like about this story. The characters and plot were so well thought out, constructed, and rolled onto the pages that it was easy to get lost in the novel's world. Cleo is a heroine who has no memory of herself. When we first meet her we see her reaction to "Kill" and what she sees as his reaction to her. For Cleo (nameless for a good portion of the book) there's this familiar feeling that washes over her when looking into Kill's eyes, as though she's known him before. The pull between them is incredible and is another reason the story is so powerful, their chemistry is off the charts!
"Kill" is the President of the motorcycle gang that "accidentally" rounded up Cleo in their trafficking round up. His real name is Arthur Killian and he is not only ruthless, but also extremely intelligent. He can't believe the woman standing before him. He's shocked, torn, angry, and desperate all at once. Arthur is such a complex character and his struggles with the truth and what he doesn't want to accept cause him to have quite a bit of anguish throughout the story. Even while being a darker sort of man, there is redemption to be found. There is love, light, and tenderness.
The story swirls around and even gives some insight into "Kill's" mind towards the end with his flashbacks. I liked seeing it through his eyes to understand his frustrations, anger, hurt, and confusion. Most of the book is told through Cleo's eyes and it is through her eyes that you fall in love with "Kill." He's not perfect but he is damn sure redeemable in every sense of the word. There's almost nothing hotter than a dark and torn redeemable bad boy. This is book one in the series and leaves off with a massive cliffhanger that will make you shriek, well, it made me shriek!
